Go North, Young at Heart

Look at you – you paid the freight and brought your surfboard all the way to Puerto Vallarta, only to learn from the staff at your villa rental Puerto Vallarta that this particular part of Banderas Bay doesn’t make waves. No worries. Travel a few miles north of the city and find all the surf you can handle.

A 45-minute bus trip will put you in Sayulita, the town known as surf central in this part of Mexico. Whether you are an experienced surfer or a newcomer to the sport, the folks in the surf shops can help you out. You can rent a board (or buy a new one, if you chose not to pay the freight) and hire an instructor, right on the beach.

Not a surfer? You can still spend a pleasant day up the coast from your villa rental Puerto Vallarta; just go a bit farther north to the little fishing village of San Blas and enjoy some quiet time on a beach that attracts crowds of local folks. It’s a tourist experience of a different sort – the same beautiful water and a much slower pace. Take your snorkel and mask and see what’s swimming around.

Puerto Vallarta Road Trip

It seems that Puerto Vallarta rarely sleeps. From the moment you greet the day from the balcony of your Mexican vacation villa rental, there is something happening, and it usually involves a crowd. When you start to feel like you might need to re-invent your personal space, get out of town.

There are a couple of destinations within an hour or two of the city that will transport you a different kind of Mexico vacation experience. Plan a road trip and enjoy life beyond the city’s limits.

San Sebastian has the look of old Mexico; much of the day’s activity still happens in or near the plaza. Formerly the vibrant commercial hub of the area’s thriving mining industry, today the village features more quiet pursuits. Travel by bus and you won’t have to worry about finding the correct route.

The quietly lovely fishing village of San Blas might be the place to escape if you can’t bear to get too far from the water and beach. Located about 60 miles north of the city, you can visit to the church and the ruins of an old fort, then settle down and drink in the relative peace and quiet.
