Puerto Vallarta’s Plaza Principal

Maybe you can see it from your Villa Puerto Vallarta and maybe not, but in any case, you really should take the time to visit the city’s Plaza Principal. When you get there, you may find that it may seem familiar to you in some way. And no wonder; after all, cities and towns around the globe are built out around a similar feature. Thanks in part to the Spanish influence in Mexico, the plaza is the traditional heart of many Mexican villages and towns.

Like others of its type, you’ll find the usual community structures surrounding the plaza in Puerto Vallarta, including the cathedral, in this case Our Lady of Guadalupe Cathedral, and the primary civic building, the city’s Palacio Municipal. And it’s not uncommon to encounter a group of folks gathered in the plaza for a special event or activity. Even when there’s nothing special going on, you’ll still see folks scattered about, chatting and watching.

The Plaza Principal comes alive in the evening. You may find a musical group performing a live concert "al fresco," while music lovers kick up their heels to the tunes. The city’s community band takes center stage on Sunday evenings (if you’re staying near enough, you might hear them from your Villa Puerto Vallarta). And there’s no telling when an up-and-coming performer will decide to favor the plaza crowd with a special showing.
